Accessing Champion from Outside the Indiana University Network
For security reasons, only certain IP numbers are allowed to login to Champion. If you attempt to login (via ssh/scp/sftp/ftp) from a non-IU Internet service provider (ISP), such as AOL, Kiva, or Blue Marble, you will be denied access beginning June 25, 2004. Instead you must make a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection to access central web accounts.
What is a Virtual Private Network?
A virtual private network, or VPN, allows you to temporarily join a private network across a public network. By creating an encrypted tunnel between two hosts (in this case, the non-IU Internet Service Provider and the IU Network) you will be able to authenticate and act as part of the IU network. Once authenticated, you will be able to access Champion. What do I need in order to make a VPN connection?
In order to make a VPN connection, you will need to have an IU Network ID and password. You should use your personal IU Network ID and password to make your VPN connection. Once connected, you will be able to SSH or SFTP to your Champion account using the www account username and password. If you are not affiliated with IU but you do work for the University that requires you to access Champion, you may be eligible to obtain a sponsored account which will give you an IU Network ID which you can use to make a VPN connection. To obtain a sponsored account, a full time staff or faculty member in the department for which you are doing work needs to contact actadmin@iupui.edu. These accounts must be renewed every semester.
