How to use the WinSCP Program on Webserve
We suggest using WinSCP as your SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) client. It is availabe for free via the IU Ware site.
1. Open the Secure File Transfer Program:
Either by double clicking the icon on your desktop
WinSCP Icon::
Or go to Start => Programs => WinSCP => WinSCP. The path to the program may be different from computer to computer.
2. Type the following:
Host Name: webserve.iu.edu
User Name: [account_name]
Password: [passphrase]
Replace [account_name] with the name of your web account. For most, the name of the account appears after the tilde (~) in the URL for that account. Enter the passphrase for your Webserve account in the password field.
Click on Login.

3. You can retain your connection settings by clicking the Save... button. We recommend that you do not save your passphrase in the settings for security reasons.

The first time you connect to your account on Webserve, you may receive a prompt similar to this:
Click Yes. The next time you login to your account you will not be prompted for this again.
4. On the left you will see the files and directories of your local computer. On the right you will see the contents of your account on Webserve.
By double-clicking the www (either on the icon or the name, www),
you can move to the www directory of your account.

5. Now the files in the www directory are listed on the right.
The drop-down menu tells which directory you are working in on your
Webserve account(1).
You can move back to your login directory by clicking on the Up icon (2).

6. To transfer files, you can drag and drop your files between the two panes. If you drag the files from the left pane (local computer) to the right pane (Webserve account) you will upload those files to your web account. If you drag the files from the right pane (Webserve account) to the left pane (local computer) you will download those files from your web account.
